Very good radio
  • Very good radio and price. Fits most of our needs. If it could use up to the 160 band it would be perfect.

Seems quite well built and no issues with it working
  • I am very pleased with the purchase and would recommend it if you want "the most for you buck". But having said that, I wish I had purchased one with an internal GPS. The unit has one weakness - you must unscrew a cover and screw in a receiver plate to use a headphone. Other than that, I find it a good purchase
  • Pros: Build Quality
  • Cons: Headphone Receiver Plate needed
  • GREAT ALL AROUND SERVICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great quality and not hard to use
  • After reading several reviews about the radio I was a little concerned about it's user interface. However, after reading the manual and using it for a week, I have no more concerns. I find it easy to use and the controls are logical so I don't have to keep going back to the manual. Transmitting takes a lot of power and really drains the battery fast. I will purchase Lithiium AA batteries for use when I'm flying.
  • Pros: Great quality, very clear even with the rubber ducky antenna, battery life for receiving is fine. Water resistant.
  • Cons: Buttons are too small for gloved hands.

Occupation / Rating:
Good radio, owner's manual not so much
  • First, the good: Good reception, can get ATIS well off airport property. Transmission power appears good.
The rest: Battery life isn't too good, but with AAs and other reviews, not surprising. Yaesu SERIOUSLY needs to rewrite the owner's manual. Without search engines and the internet, there are lots of things that are incomplete.
    Overall, it's a keeper.
  • Pros: Pricepoint, rebate, Reception and transmission range.
  • Cons: Battery life and operating instructions.
Occupation / Rating:
Very good value for the price.
  • I have to mention shipping time. I ordered on 26 Aug to be sent by the cheapest option (express shipping) half way round the world to New Zealand, and get this. It arrived at my home on 05 Sept. Thats only 10 days. Well done!
Will definitely be using your company again.

Very intuitive
  • I am quite impressed. I had a chance to use the rival brand in an actual emergency. 2 pilots on board and we couldn't tune anything but the favorites without the manual; essentially useless. That event started my search for a better portable. The FTA550 is my solution.
The FTA550 was easy to tune a comm frequency right out of the box, without the manual.
Communications from air to ground are clean and crisp.
The squelch is super easy to set. Push the squelch button then use the knob to turn it up/dn.
Flip/flop frequencies are easy and intuitive.
The headset cable is included and works well.
In short, I am very satisfied.
Generally excellent product.
  • First off, as regards it's prime function ( at least to me) as a back-up VHF radio, it's an outstanding product. Both reception and (apparently) transmission seem to be pretty much 5x5, with excellent range.

Having said that, I have 3 minor gripes:

    1) the antenna mount, while simple, does not positively lock into a secure detent, thus it is easily dislodged.

    2) the conversion from integral "speaker" use to "headset" use, while also simple, requires a small screwdriver to remove the cover, secure the headset jacks and then you're left with a small piece and 2 small screws, easily lost. A simple pressure cap and positive bayonet lock for the headset plugs would be a much better method.

    3) the operator's handbook leaves much to be desired, not to mention left out, as regards using functions other than simply communicate. I'd say this is pretty typical of handbooks for just about anything that's made in Asia, so I'm guessing that this is the area of origin for this radio.

On the plus side, it's pretty easy to figure out how to use it as a simple radio, so no big deal. The issue os trying to figure out how to use the memory (and access it), how to use the VOR function, and a ew other goodies.

Bottom line: high quality product, seemingly well built, that performs better than I expected as a hand-held VHF simplex radio, at an excellent price.

    I'd happily purchase another one.

Great Product
  • I have not used this radio in flight yet but I have programmed it to include updating the firmware.

Very easy to understand and very easy to navigate.
Nice Radio
  • Great portable radio once you figure it out. I used this radio the day it arrived and it was easy to use once I read the manual with the radio in my hand. The only con I have found is that it is easy to adjust the frequency with out knowing it if you bump the knob if you do not lock the dial function. For the money it is a very good radio.
