Product Description

The Telex Airman 8 ANR Headset is a lightweight noise-reducing headset designed specifically for optimizing pilot communications in commercial and business turbine aircraft. Building on the tradition of the Airman 850, the Airman 8 has improved durability, intelligibility, and comfort.

The Airman 8 is the lightest Active Noise Reduction headset on the market and the only FAA TSO C139a approved ANR headset to utilize Telex’s proprietary battery-free ANR system. Soft pliable ear cushions and headband pads combine with dual direction ear cup pivots to provide long flight wearing comfort.

Note: An active intercom or Hot Mic is needed to fully power the ANR on this headset.

Sound Quality
The Airman 8 features a high-quality amplified electret microphone for clear voice transmission. Improved ANR and microphone noise cancellation ensures superior in-flight communication.

Active Noise Reduction
The Airman 8 headset features enhanced ANR (Active Noise Reduction) with even more noise reduction, helping to improve intelligibility and reduce fatigue. The position of the ANR switch has also moved to the forward-facing ear cup side, making it easier to reach the switch without having to remove the headset.

A unique feature of the Airman 8 is that it is powered from its microphone system, eliminating the need for batteries or special connectors.

A strong stainless steel headband with metal pivots improves durability for long headset life. The new microphone boom design provides stronger rotation stops, utilizing the full diameter of the ear cup. Furthermore, a pre-coiled overhead cord has been added to extend the useful life of the headset. The main headset cord is also more robust and features an improved design of the band relief on the ear cup entrance.

Comfort and Fit
The soft headband pad and lightweight design provides comfort, even on long flights. An added yoke provides enhanced comfort by allowing ear cup movement in all directions. Furthermore the Airman 8 comes with replaceable ear cup covers and leatherette ear cushions.

Safety Improvements
An acoustic limiter protects users against sudden increases in sound levels.

Not very good, uncomfortable
  • I purchased the Airman 8 for use on the 737. I was really hoping I was going to like this product. As soon as I put it on, I realized I would not. The head band is extremely uncomfortable. Inflight I was constantly trying to adjust it so it wouldn't bother me, to no avail. The sound quality was decent on the headset, and the microphone was good. The noise cancelling was nonexistent . I could literally notice no difference in noise when the headset was off my head vs on. I am returning this, and hope to find a better product.

ANR produces a loud buzz on the B717
  • I really wanted to like this headset. The shape and quality of the materials are very nice and I was expecting to enjoy the ANR features. However, I quickly discovered that there was a very distinct and noticable buzzing sound that drove me crazy when the ANR was selected on. I will caution that this problem is likely particular to the aircraft that I fly: the Boeing 717. I am returning mine in exchange for the Airman 7.

Very Nice
  • I’ve been using this headset for a year and a half. The semi hard case protects the headset perfectly as the earpieces swivel when laying flat. If you select model with the GA plug, the Airbus adapter fits nicely in the center of the headset with the case closed. The ear pieces cover your ears perfectly and are pillow soft. And they allow just enough ambient noise to keep situational awareness on the flight deck. I’ve also owned Bose, but this Telex ANR 8 works perfectly for me in a mostly quiet Airbus flight deck already.

  • The headset is good and works on the 737, but the band with the two bumps start to dig in after about an hour of having it on. It does help with the noise reduction on the plane. Unsure whether I will be keeping it........

  • Overall, the Telex 8 is a good upgrade of the 850, being slightly more comfortable and having better placement of the wiring. The noise cancelling is adequate, given that there are no batteries in the system, and makes a 6 - 8 hour flight more bearable. The main drawback is the mic, which is on a flexible arm, but is very difficult to tell which way it's pointing just by feeling it and trying to set it correctly because of its 'circular' design. Unless you have it pointing perfectly at your mouth at a distance of about 2mm, ATC will be on you for poor quality transmissions....... quite annoying. It's unfortunate that an otherwise good quality product is let down by such a poorly designed, low quality mic.

  • Have used it in the A320 and A330. Can be worn continuously for at least an hour with no real comfort issues. ANR is good but not great, but does not require panel power or batteries so a real advantage there.
    Having said that the speech quality is excellent - easy to hear ATC non-native English speakers. Similar to the 850, positioning on the ear is critical. On a take-off on a rough runway some minor movement was noticeable. No issues with reliability so far.

Headset replaced by local telex
  • My very first headset as an airline FO in the A320. We rarely use the headset during cruise (only from push to FL200) so after passing FL200, I just grab the headset from the top of my head and stow it in the sliding door handle. Very fast to setup and stow

    Performance-wise, it's very good. Audio out is very loud and detailed.

    However, 5 months in, the cable developed some 'strain' maybe due to the fact that the case is TOO SMALL. My headset stopped working (or rather intermittent) while on duty.

    Good thing there is an authorized Bosch (parent of Telex i think?) service center in my country. I sent the unit there and after without a headset for a month, they replaced the headset without a cost. Kudos to the manufacturer.

  • Cons: Supplied case is too small. Would recommend that the cable be an L-type on the terminating end on the headset to avoid "fraying"
Better one
  • Generally It is good to wear in B737 cockpit. It is easy and comfortable to use. I hope its nose cancelling function can be better in the next Airman series.

  • I'm very happy with this headset. Vs the 750. I can hear and understand what is being said by the controllers. Especially from Central American countries.
    The transmission through the Mike is excellent.
    Worth the money. I would never go back to the 750.

  • B737NG Driver.

    Bought these to replace my old 850's.

    First thing I noticed in trying them on was that the coiled wires had a tendency to pull the ear cups back up off your ears after you had pulled them down.

    Second, the little tine pads on the headband, even though Gel filled, created a pressure point on top of my head ( I don't have a lot of hair top-side)

    And thirdly after a three day trip with some legs in the 4 hour range the headset ear pads made my ears quite sore form the pressure points.

    Noise cancelling seemed to be about the same as the 850's

    I really wanted this to headset to workout but sadly it is going back.

big improvement but needs a modification
  • I purchased the Airman 8 ANR to replace my old (and broken) Telex 850.
    The biggest improvment is the wiring. My old one stopped working as the wires got worn out but with the AIrman 8 that wil not be a problem with the way the wires are springy and already loosely wrapped around the earpiece arms.
    The ANR works as well as the older 850. The only negative is the limited out and in movement the earpieces have on the ear. There are tabs in a slot which restrict the moevement and to get a better fit, for me, I cut the tabs off so there is more available movement when on the ear.

  • This headset is very uncomfortable and very noisy. I fly a 170/175 but I wore them while jumpseating on a 73 and a 319 recently and they are still noisy. I'm sending mine back.

  • ear cushions are not so great, gel would help. after a while your ears hurt.
    In a B738, noise is reduced quite a bit, not as much as you would wish if you aim to total silence as Bose.
    case is insufficiently spaced, they would crack in a week if stored daily in it.
    Sensitive microphone makes the noise reduction but it also transfers it to the colleague through intercom.
    Would appreciate an air gel cushion set for ears, fatiguing after a few hours. Painful after a whole day.

  • I previously owned the Telex 850, used daily for years in Boeing aircraft. The ANR 8 seems more robust, and the ear cushions do a better job of passive noise reduction. It is as comfortable as the 850 over longer segments.

Earcup friction fix and customer service.
  • Ok.. this is the second review I have written. The first described the issue with the extremely loose earcup friction and how this made the headset unusable. I had little joy with Telex customer service BUT the people at Marv Golden immediately emailed me. They said that the friction issue was limited to the first batch of headsets and that it had been fixed. They replaced my headset - this is EXCELLENT customer service. Now.. here's my new review for the headset. I love it an I'm glad I bought it. I still believe the case is too small but otherwise, the headset is comfortable and the nose cancelling (without the need for batteries) is excellent.

Highly Recommend for the Mainline Pilot
  • I just began flying a 737 and needed a new ANR headset. I thought the only choices would be the Bose or the new David Clarks, but then I decided to see if Telex had anything new to offer.

    Once I saw the Airman 8 I was pleasantly surprised to see another option. I wanted something affordable without all the bells and whistles. Personally bluetooth capability was not a priority for me, but if that's something you desire you won't get it on this. I also liked the Telex because of its compactness.

    After a few trips using the Airman 8 I am very pleased I chose it. Nicely made with great sound quality. Even on long stints with it on it is comfortable and I have not experienced any discomfort with it at all.

    My only wish is that the headband was more a little more robust, but it is not something I've noticed to the point that upsets me. My old headset had the dual band headband and it was amazing, as once you placed it on your head, it didn't move whatsoever. You will have to find the sweet spot with this headset in order for it to remain in place consistently.

    Highly recommend.

  • Happy so far. ANR works in A320 even without hot mike selected on. Makes hearing tower communication easier during take off or in reverse thrust, which I was having trouble with.

Poor quality
  • Marv Golden was awesome. They had the best price, order was easy to place, and item was shipped fast and in good packaging.

    The product was less than desirable. Way over priced and cheaply made. The plastic is poor quality and I doubt this will make it through multiple plane swaps for very long. The ANR is pretty good for not requiring a battery pack; however, there is an annoying low hum. ATC is hard to hear. Everything over the radio sounds somewhat muffled. Intercom, pilot to pilot, is clear.
    It is comfortable to wear but would be much better with gel ear pads. I have used this in multiple planes.

    I actually prefer my old $140 AVCOM over this.

    I wouldn't recommend this. The previous model has better sound quality for some reason but is less comfortable.

Great headset!
  • I’ve used the Telex Airman 8 on two 5-day 757 trips so far, and am very pleased with the performance. I was using the Telex 850 previously. The Airman 8 allows me to cover both ears taking full advantage of the noise reduction quality, yet I can still hear the other pilot very well. I haven’t missed one radio call or detail - the sound is amazing, and controllers hear me very clearly. I’ve worn the headset for 5 hours at a time with few if any hotspots.

  • I love the new Telex airman 8, it works as advertised. Very light and comfortable .. makes a world of difference on long legs, and truly preserves hearing as one does have to turn the volume up anymore, ATC communications are crystal clear, and the intercom is also amazing. Best of all since i read on the manual that it doesn’t like heat so much and me being based in Dubai, I carry it with me to and from work .. you can’t feel the weight of the headset at all logging it around all the time.

  • The earpieces rotate any time you look down. The headband puts pressure on just two small points. It will give you a headache.
    The audio quality is as good as the 850.
    I am going back to my 850’s. They are lighter, more comfortable and both are the same audio quality.

    I was disappointed.

    MG Note: The initial production-run of Telex Airman 8 headsets had a manufacturing issue that allowed the earcups to rotate too freely. This has been fixed. All new Airman 8 headsets will not have this issue and should fit better and should no longer rotate off of the head.
