Flying to Alaska over
British Columbia and the Yukon Territory in a small aircraft is
for many pilots the adventure of a lifetime. This video DVD
attempts to prepare the private pilot for just such a trip.
Increasing numbers of pilots have been making the flight in
recent years, using the Alaska Highway as a helpful guide path
for VFR flight via the inland routes, and every year about a
dozen U.S. registered aircraft bound to or from Alaska crash.
Experience shows that pilots
unfamiliar with northern navigation and operating in sparsely
settled areas in Canada and Alaska tend to underestimate the
hazards involved. During the Scott's nine month preparation
period for their Alaska trip, they felt that the private pilot
would have a tremendous advantage if they could study a video
presentation.
Most impressive abut this
video is its emphasis upon safety, proper planning and preflight
procedures. It does not intend to serve as a "how-to" film, but
rather to give a pilot some idea of what to expect on their
flight. A handy 28 page "Pre-flight Booklet" is included, which
discusses landmarks, facilities at airport enroute, helpful maps
and charts, customs services, necessary survival gear, tips, and
a list of recommended reading.
