The Unites States Air Force (USAF) WWII Roundel is a variation of the US Army Air Corps Roundel and has been used on US Military aircraft since 1941.
The US Roundel was designed to coordinate with the color and style of roundels used by French and British allies at the time. After the Pearl Harbor in 1941, however, the red circle in the center of the star was removed in order to distance any resemblance to the Japanese flag. This resulted in the white star within the U.S. Stripes logo, which is seen on all US military aircraft today.
